CHICKENHAWK
Paul Astick: vocals, guitar
Robert Stephens: guitar
Ryan Clark: bass
Matthew Reid: drums
Biography:
Chickenhawk were Born in 2004 originally as a three piece. After a constant stream of touring around the UK, we released a 3 track demo that featured in Kerrang Magazine as their demo of the week in 2005 and then finally unleashed our debut self-titled album in 2007 (Sound Devastation Records).
Shortly after the release of the album, Chickenhawk went through some radical changes including adding the new drummer – Matt Reid (ex-Whores Whores Whores) in mid-2008, moving Paul Astick from drum/vocal duties to guitar/vocals.
Shortly afterwards in 2009, we joined Brew (Leeds label) and created the space themed video for the song ‘NASA Vs ESA’ taken from the self-titled album and later released the A.Or Not? EP in September, our first release for Chickenhawk on Brew. The EP received international acclaim and the lead track ‘I hate this, do you like it?’ (Youtube) gained national radio play from the likes of Radio 1, Radio 6, Total Rock and XFM amongst many others.
After the completion of the A.Or Not? EP, Chickenhawk then went onto work with NME photographer Danny North on his directorial debut, the zombie themed video for a new track taken from A. Or Not? – ‘I hate this, do you like it?’ which received over 30,000 views on Youtube within only a few weeks of its release and is still growing!
After the success of the EP, we were approached by Leeds based label Dance To The Radio (Forward Russia / Pigeon Detectives / Grammatics etc) to feature the song ‘Scorpieau’ on Volume 3 of their 4×12″ compilation. The song appeared alongside Esben & The Witch / Pulled Apart By Horses and Holy State to name a few.
Writing and recording for a follow up to the self-titled album (scheduled for release in late 2010) is well underway. In the meantime, a brand new re-release of the self-titled album and EP with new packaging and artwork as well as a full re-mix and master will be available later this year.
Reviews 2009/2010:
NME Magazine – Track of the week ‘I Hate This, Do You Like It?
Leeds based Chickenhawk are a group of riff thrashing metal bastards from the wrong side of your worst hangover. Take note, their drummer hits harder than the last time you dreamed you were Todd Trainer. This is the perfect raw vocal antidote to chirpy summer sing-along.
Rock-A-Rolla
Truly their own vision, no matter how skewed a vision that maybe.
Steve Lamacq
“Crazed guitar rock from Leeds….featuring the ‘Beachers Brook’ of guitar solo’s” – ‘I Hate This Do You Like It’ on Radio 6.
Collectivezine
Riffs, hooks, face-pummelling ferocity and slick solidarity
Metal Hammer
Chickenhawk take just over 3 minutes to annihilate any suspicion of musical conformity. We demand you go and watch them as soon as humanly possible!
Kerrang
Killer chaotic freaked-out prog-core KKKK
Organ magazine
This just might be the British metal album of the year. Oh yes, that good!
